Davis Street will be the hosting site for the "Ready to Read" program, directed by Ann Wooten and sponsored by ENRICH, which is a group of local women from Elon who have taken on the challenge to promote reading readiness for Kindergarten children. One of the schools that ENRICH has targeted for this program is Newlin Elementary School , which is the school district for our church neighborhood. This group will be working with families who have children who will enter kindergarten in the fall. The group will also work with the parents already attending the ESL classes here at Davis Street who have kindergarten children. The “Ready To Read” session will be able to work with about 20 families helping them learn fun ways to read with their child and develop tools to help their child be better prepared for their first experience at school. The sessions are free to the families. During each session each family will receive a new book to take home to enjoy reading together. ENRICH has found funding for the cost of the books that the families will receive and other materials needed for the sessions. The sessions will be held on Wednesdays from 4:00—5:30 p.m. on the following dates: August 6 & 13. Thank you, |

Children & Youth Summer Reading Program
The United Methodist Women have purchased a selection of books for summer time reading for children and youth. These are books that inspire Christian values and mores . To encourage our young people to get on board this summer and keep their reading skills sharp, Children's Ministry is sponsoring a reading contest. If your child reads at least two of the books from the UMW collection and writes a summary of the books, they will be eligible for a trip to Emerald Point Water Park in Greensboro on Wednesday, August 20. You will need to see Brenda Wilson, Kathryn Self, Penny Thompson, or Mary Kimrey to check out a book. Or you may come to the church office and checkout a book. For a book to qualify for the contest, it must be at the child's reading level. After you have read the book and written the summary, you will need to return the book and summary to Brenda Wilson. The following is a list of the UMW books: |

Davis St. Homecoming A committee in our church is working on plans to have a reunion of the UMYF groups that were here when Floyd Hinshaw served our church. Please remember that these were very large, Christ-centered youth groups, which Floyd led with strong enforcement in their Christian lives. Davis St. had 5 ministers emerge from these groups, and we are so looking forward to this reunion at Homecoming on September 28. On the Saturday before, we are planning a cookout, jam session and sing-a-long at the church, but we need you to help with names, addresses, e-mail addresses and phone numbers, so we will not leave anyone out. Because of our busy schedules, we need this information as soon as possible, in order to notify our guests so they can mark their calendars. Please complete the information below and return as soon as possible, by placing in the offering plate, or returning to the church office. We want to start working on these special invitations. Thanks for your help, and mark your calendars now! |
